Morning Devotion; Read Exodus - The Sabbath

Exodus 31:12  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 13  Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. 14  Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15  Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16  Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 17  It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. 18  And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Are you Jewish or are you Hebrew by birth? Most people I know are neither of Jewish or Hebrew. When we read verse seventeen, we see this wonderful day a day of rest was given to the Jews.  “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever:”

Verse seventeen also tells us that the sabbath was given to man from the very beginning. “for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.”

Man was given the Sabbath as a day of rest. Mark 2:27  And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

The LORD from mount Zion gave these commandments to the Jews making the Sabbath exclusively for Israel.

Some may ask, when did the Sabbath change to Sunday. Answer: It never changed. The Sabbath is the Sabbath for Israel. (Read Ezekiel chapter forty six, you will find even in the millennium Israel worships the Lord on the Sabbath.)

The church, meaning those born-again will be in the millennium but will not worship on the Sabbath.

Here are some facts, the Lord rose from the dead on the first day of the week which is our Sunday (Luke 24:1-3). He rose from the dead the day after the regular sabbath.

The disciples were commanded to go to Jerusalem and wait for the power from God.

Acts 1:4  And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

Acts 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 2:1  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Pentecost took place fifty days after the resurrection. Seven times seven is forty nine. Jesus empowered the church on the fiftieth day, the day after the Sabbath which was a Sunday.

Jesus rose from the dead the day after the sabbath and empowered the church the day after the sabbath. The church met on the first day of the week, the day after the Sabbath.

Acts 20:7  And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them,.. (Breaking bread is taking the Lord’s supper, an ordinance given to the New Testament church.)

The new testament church meets, worships and praises the Lord on Sunday the first day of the week, that is our day of rest.

Are you resting from your toil and worshipping the Lord on the first day of the week?

Jesus is the author of a better testament. Do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
