Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Week Leadership
Exodus 32:1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. 2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. 3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD. 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. 7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
Moses was up in the mount speaking with the LORD and receiving instruction. The ten commandments were given, many other commandments were given, and the pattern for the tabernacle and all the instruments were provided. He was up in that mountain for quite a while.
In his absence Israel became idle. Idle minds tend to become lugubrious; looking as if one had lost a pound and found a penny. In other words they thought they had lost Moses and turned to Aaron. Now, Aaron was alone, there was no one there to support him. Moses was up in the mount.
It seemed that Aaron was pliable and could be manipulated for they convinced him to make a golden calf a false god to go before them. “Up, make us gods, which shall go before us.”
The crowd must have been very persuasive in demanding Aaron make them an idol of Egypt. They wanted to return to the very thing that oppressed them previously. “Up, make us gods, which shall go before us” was not a request it was a demand.
2 Peter 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
They knew that having false god’s was wrong. The idea was pervasive for all the plagues brought upon Pharaoh were against the false god’s of Egypt.
Exodus 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
Even the song of Moses illustrates they knew not to embrace the god’s of Egypt.
Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
My Christian friend, remember from whence you came and from what you were saved from. Never, ever, return to the sin which oppressed you before.
Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
I am reminded of what the Lord said to the church of Laodicea. The term Laodicea means “rights of the people”
Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Just as Israel demanded their rights with Aaron, many churches today demand their rights over the will of God and there are pastors who yield just as Aaron yielded. They returned to their former bondage.
My friend, you can be delivered from the bondage of sin. Trusting Jesus delivers you.
The choice is still yours,
Pastor Cook
