Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - The Priests' Garments

Exodus 28:1  And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons. 2  And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty. 3  And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. 4  And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. 5  And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen. 6  And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work. 7  It shall have the two shoulderpieces thereof joined at the two edges thereof; and so it shall be joined together. 8  And the curious girdle of the ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according to the work thereof; even of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen. 9  And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and grave on them the names of the children of Israel: 10  Six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth. 11  With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel: thou shalt make them to be set in ouches of gold. 12  And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

Every colour and instrument and article that has to do with the Tabernacle revealed the Lord Jesus Christ in some aspect. This passage of scripture is no different.

God has chosen Aaron to serve as the priest. He was to wear certain garments, holy garments, in the service of the LORD.

When the bible mentions the word “Holy” it means “set apart.” The articles, the cloths, the furniture and the instruments in the tabernacle were set apart for God, they were Holy. In this case Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons were set apart for God’s service as well.

They were to wear holy garments for the work of the LORD. The garments were to be made in such a way that they would exude glory and beauty. “And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.”

And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.”

The first and outermost garment was called the ephod. It was glorious in colour in that it too was of gold, and blue,  and purple,  and scarlet,  and fine twined linen (white). All the colours of Christ Jesus our Lord.

The ephod was like an apron that covered from front to back and of equal lengths. It must have been very beautiful.

Both the front and back of the ephod was attached at the shoulder not with buttons or clips or being tied with straps. It was held together with onyx stones. There were two stones each with the names of six tribes of Israel, twelve names in all.

These two stones with the twelves tribes of Israel engraved on the were to be on the shoulder of the priest bearing their names before the LORD.

The shoulder is the place of strength; anything place upon the shoulder was to be born or carried in burden.

My friend, Jesus the burden bearer of both Israel and the Christian.

Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

For the Christian, we know Jesus bears our burden of both sin and salvation. He bore your burden of sin at Calvary.

Isaiah 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He bears your burden of salvation as well.

Luke 15:4  What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5  And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

My friend, if you are saved, rejoice for your burden bearer is alive and well bearing all of your burdens. Would you trust in Jesus?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
