Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 30:1  The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal, 2  Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man. 3  I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy. 4  Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?

This chapter is written by Agur, which means Gatherer. Early church fathers and Rabbis claim this was actually Solomon. He had given this set of proverbs to Ithiel and Ucal.

These verses indicate that man had the inability to comprehend the Lord. While man thinks he can, he does not fully understand the Lord.

Isaiah 55:8  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

No one has ascended up to God and made to understand God, that is impossible.

However God has descended to earth that we might have a better understanding of Him. God sent Jesus.

John 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Romans 10:6  But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7  Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8  But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Jesus came to earth to give himself a sacrifice to save mankind. He also gave us His word that we might have a better understanding of the Lord.

Jesus, in praying for His disciples, said in John 17:8  “For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.”

Jesus, the living Word of God has given us the written word of God, that we might better understand Him.

If you are like Agur, in our text, you will understand that the more you learn of God, the more you will realize how much you need the Lord to reveal even more of Himself to you.

How does one do that? Read your bible and pray every day.

The first step is to be saved trusting in God’s Son, whom He has given, the Lord Jesus Christ.

After that God has a wealth of knowledge to give to every person.

2Peter 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
