Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Bitter Water Made Sweet

Exodus 15:22  So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. 23  And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24  And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? 25  And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, 26  And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. 27  And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters.

Having been gloriously delivered by God from Egypt, the children of Israel sang a great song. (Read Verses 1-21 again.)

Now they are on a new journey, a new path for the Lord has come upon them. Now they were embarking on the path that would lead them to the Land flowing with milk and honey. (Exodus 3:8)

Christian, (when I say Christian I mean born again believer, not just anyone who calls themselves Christian) do you realize you are on a journey? Your life is a life of salvation by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Your journey is one that leads to heaven and eternal joy with Christ. Your life is the Lord’s; He desires the best for you and wants you to be a changed person. I am so glad Jesus had made me such.

Romans 8:29  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

I heard a song this past weekend. “He’s still working on me to make me what I aught to be” was the lyric. O, my friend, if you are truly born again, God’s desire is to make you a better person.

Israel, is now embarking on that journey. God will bring them to His promised place. In this journey they must learn grow in and trust in the LORD.

Most of our growing experiences do not come from pleasantries in life, they come from trials.

1Peter 1:7  That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

Israel had come to their first trial. How did they respond? Exodus 15:22  So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. 23  And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24  And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

Instead of going to the LORD and trusting in the LORD, they turned against the man of God. They were walking by sight and not by faith.

My friend, when you enter into a trial or things do not go the way your expect, don’t complain about the preacher or sneak behind his back and gossip. Go to the Lord, be a godly person of prayer. Talk with the Lord and pray for your preacher.

When trials happen, be grateful for your preacher who goes to the Lord on your behalf. Exodus 15:25  And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

As we look at this issue of water, we find that God has given us a sweet and living water. That water is made sweet by the Lord Jesus Christ who died on the tree, the cross, that we might have living water.

Jesus said in John 4:14  “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 7:37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

Will you have the sweet water of salvation?

Isaiah 55:1  Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
