Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Memorial in the Testimony

Exodus 16:30  So the people rested on the seventh day. 31  And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32  And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt. 33  And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations. 34  As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. 35  And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan. 36  Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.

Setting the palate of a child can often be difficult especially if that child is particular or picky in nature.

We try all kinds of methods to provoke the child to eat things that are good for them. How many have used the flying plane method pretending the food on the fork or spoon is an airplane? You make the sounds of an airplane and hopefully fly the tasteful morsel into the child’s mouth only to have the runway close at the last second.

God did not have to do this with Israel, they discovered the wonderful food called manna which looked like a coriander seed and tasted like fresh wafers and honey. I enjoy the taste of a good morning role with honey and a cup of coffee.

Israel was promised by God that they would have this wonderful food until they came to the promised land of Canaan. Forty years without fail they had this wonderful food. God is consistently good and gracious to us.

We know that the Manna was an Old Testament picture of Jesus.

John 6:51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Have you ever tasted the wonderful gift of God which is salvation by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ?

Psalms 34:8  O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Christian, are you now continually enjoying the wonderful gift of salvation and are you growing with the food God has provided namely His word?

Eating the manna was a daily necessity of each and every person as they walked with God in the wilderness.

Partaking of the bread of the word of God is also a necessity of each and every Christian as we traverse this wilderness world. We taste and grow and live of the Manna of God’s word until we ourselves reach the promised land called heaven.

1Peter 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Have tasted and have you grown beyond the milk of newborn babies and are you now mature in God’s word?

Hebrews 5:12  For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13  For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

My friend, there is more than just the taste salvation, there is daily growth in God word. 2 Peter 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Imagine the process of the Israelites when they first tasted the Manna. First they were excited. They would peak outside and see the Manna. Then gladly run out gather it and bake and cook and make delightful dishes with it. Then, they would become confident know it was always there. Waking up every morning knowing God was with them with the cloud by day, the fire by night and the Manna for food must have been a very comforting thing.

What about you, do you know God is with you every day? Are you not only tasting the goodness of God but are confident knowing God provides for you every day?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
