Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Water from the Rock

Exodus 17:1  And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2  Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? 3  And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? 4  And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. 5  And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. 6  Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7  And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Again, yes, again the children of Israel were brought to a place of testing. They had failed at the waters of Marah in Exodus 15. Now the LORD brings them to the testing place one more time.

Again, yes, again they chided with Moses; only this time their chiding went beyond words, it escalated to threats of stoning and murder. They asked the question “Is the LORD among us, or not?”

My friend, it is in our greatest times of testing that the LORD reveals Himself to us. Here Jesus revealed Himself to Israel once again.

The LORD told Moses to go up to Horeb and smite/strike the rock that was on it. Moses did as commanded and water gushed out and all the people drank and were satisfied.

“This rock, which is a vast block of red granite, 15 feet long, 10 broad, and 12 high, lies in the wilderness of Rephidim, to the west of Mount Horeb, a part of Sinai. There are abundant traces of this wonderful miracle remaining at this day. This rock has been visited, drawn, and described by Dr. Shaw and others; and holes and channels appear in the stone, which could only have been formed by the bursting out and running of water.”

This incident brought about another wonderful and glorious Old Testament picture of Christ. For Jesus is our Rock and He was smitten for our salvation.

1 Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

My friend, do you want to be satisfied with the water of life that flows from our Saviour Jesus Christ?

While Jesus was talking to the woman at the well in Samaria He spoke of the refreshing waters of life. John 4:10  Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

John 4:14  But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 7:37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Revelation 22:17  And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Would trust in the Lord Jesus to save your soul and give you that wonderful water of life?

Christian, would you continue to trust in Jesus and let Him refresh your heart and soul in times of testing?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
