Morning Devotion: Read Luke - The Importunity of Prayer

Luke 11:5  And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6  For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? 7  And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. 8  I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. 9  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

It is often said that man prays very little. I have heard statistics that people pray less than three minutes a day and most of those prayers are flippant and fickle at best. Many pastors pray only about five minutes a day.

God tells us that we should be praying constantly. We should be in constant communication with our Lord, our friend, our confidant, our Saviour.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

Colossians 4:2  Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

This passage follows the Lord’s example of prayer to His disciples. (The above text and Matthew six are commonly referred as the Lord’s prayer when in fact it is the Lord’s example of how prayer should go. The true Lord’s prayer is John chapter seventeen.)

If one truly believes in “Our Father which art win heaven” and truly believes in “give us this day our daily bread” then we should have no problem going to Him when in need.

The example in our text is of one who goes to his neighbour in time of need seeking assistance for food. His importunity drives the neighbour to give him as much as he needs. Notice, he gives him as much as he needs not as much as he wants.

IMPORTU'NITY, noun [Latin importunitas.] Pressing solicitation; urgent request; application for a claim or favor, which is urged with troublesome frequency or pertinacity. (Websters Dictionary 1828)

Are you troubled, go to God. Are you in need, go to God. Are you struggling with something, go to God. Are you filled with anxiety, go to God. Are you concerned, go to God. Are you happy, go to God. Are you satisfied, go to God.

The point is this, in all times and in every situation, in the good and difficult times, go to God.

Luke 11:9  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Be convinced that God will meet your need, that is why the Lord gives us the above example. If you are not convinced, you will not go to the Lord, and your prayer life will be lacking.

God has everything you need.

Proverbs 3:5  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8  It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
