Morning Devotion: Read Luke

Luke 4:17  And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20  And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21  And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

There is a specificity in God’s word. God being perfect in all things speaks with specifics. Man, on the other hand is for the most part unspecific.

In our text Jesus, after being tempted of the devil and departing from that temptation strong in the Spirit goes to the synagogue and reads the prophet Isaiah. However, Jesus left out one specific phrase.

Isaiah 61:2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

God, for the time being, withholds judgement and vengeance; at the appropriate time God will judge and He will do so with a vengeance against the wicked of this world.

During Jesus’ earthly ministry that type of judgement didn’t happen. Isaiah 42 describes the what Jesus will do. He will bring judgment at the right time.

Isaiah 42:1  Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2  He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3  A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4  He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

When Jesus opened that book of Isaiah and read chapter 61, He knew exactly what He was doing when He left out the day of vengeance and the day of comfort to all that mourn.

When Jesus does return He will fulfill the last part of that verse and the righteous shall be comforted and the wicked destroyed.

Psalm 58:10  The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. 11  So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Revelation 19:11  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16  And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

My friend, would you let the Lord save your soul? Jesus judged sin on Calvary’s cross and opened the way for salvation. Let His judgement be your judgment. Don’t wait until it is to late. Don’t wait until the second judgment comes.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
