Morning Devotion: Read Luke

Luke 4:21  And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22  And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? 23  And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. 24  And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. 25  But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 26  But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 27  And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. 28  And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29  And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30  But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

Our Lord Jesus Christ is the complete fulfilment of God’s promise of Love and salvation to us, to you. The issue is this, will you receive or will you reject the promise of God.

Jesus said: “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

Immediately after they began to question who was this person isn’t He Joseph’s son. Little did they know He was God in the flesh born of the Holy Ghost.

They did not know their bible, and that is the difference. If you do not know the bible you will always question. You will always rely upon information given by others and from sources that are equally as insufficient.

In verse 23 Jesus explains their self reliance rather then trusting God’s word. “And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.”

“Heal thyself” is the ideology of today. It is self-reliance rather than trusting in the Lord. It is looking to oneself for understanding, when the answer is right in front of our eyes.

Jesus said in Verse 24  “And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.”

He was familiar to them, he was one of them thus they could not see the truth.

The old phrase: “Familiarity breads contempt” comes to light in this case.

John 1:11  He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

John 5:43  I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. (This is a sad truth for many will receive another instead of Jesus Christ, especially in the end times.)

However, there is hope.

John 1:12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
