Morning Devotion: Read Luke

Luke 4:31  And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. 32  And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. 33  And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, 34  Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. 35  And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. 36  And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. 37  And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Luke 4:41  And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

GOD has a plan and His plan is well timed.

When the Lord healed people He did so to validate His ministry and to show the world that He was the Christ.

John 20:30  And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31  But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Why then would Jesus rebuke the demons who wanted to cry out saying thou art the Christ?

Because it wasn’t in God’s plan for that time.

Remember, Jesus came in the fullness of time. Galatians 4:4  But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

God’s plan was for Jesus to go to the cross and die for the sins of all mankind. The devil only wanted to destroy that an make himself like God. Isaiah 14:14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

We also know that the devil is the father of lies. Anytime he speaks he will speak lies. (Oh, that the world would understand this, but they do not.)

To allow the demons to speak would bring unwanted honour to the devil and bring troubles to the Lord before the cross. We know, from the bible, that the devil did try to take the glory from God but failed.

At the time Jesus went to the cross the devil had his power only to be defeated and destroyed by the death and resurrection of Christ.

Luke 22:53  When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Trusting Christ as Lord and saviour destroys the power the devil.

Hebrews 2:14  Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

The time of the death, burial and resurrection is complete, the devil and his power is destroyed. Jesus is ascended and sits at the right hand of God and will return to take His own to heaven. God always had been and is still in control.

(Just as a side note: those demons obeyed and shut their mouths. They knew Jesus was God.)

My friend, have you trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your saviour?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
