Morning Devotion: Read Exodus 20

Exodus 20:1  And God spake all these words, saying,

Exodus 20:3  Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Exodus 20:4  Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Exodus 20:7  Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Exodus 20:8  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Exodus 20:12  Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Exodus 20:13  Thou shalt not kill.

Exodus 20:14  Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Exodus 20:15  Thou shalt not steal.

Exodus 20:16  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Exodus 20:17  Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

How many believe that they are pretty good people and that God sees them as good. Above is a list of the ten commandments revealing that no one is completely right with God.

I personally know people who have committed adultery and have coveted other men’s wives and caused divorce. I know people who steal and take the name of the Lord God in vain. I know people who have idols both physical and idols of the heart that they worship. And yet, these same people believe they are ok with God.

Romans 3:10  As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11  There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12  They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

One of the reasons God gave the ten commandments was to show us that we are incapable of keeping them. The ten commandments were given as a teacher to show us that we are undone and cannot save ourselves because we are sinners.

Galatians 3:24  Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Therefore, we must understand that no one is righteous enough to give God anything whereby he can be saved. Everything offered to God, whether it be religious or by personal appeal or corporate as in church, can afford anyone salvation. Yet, people believe that they can take communion or get baptized or go through catechism or spend copious hours in prayer and God will be pleased and save their soul.  What they do not understand is the fact that they are sinner to begin with, and anything offered to God is laced with sin and therefore cannot be acceptable to God. The schoolmaster, the law has spoken.

Logically then, one must find salvation in something other than themselves. There is only one who fits the bill for that, his name is Jesus.

2Corinthians  5:19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

2Corinthians 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

The sinless one who has kept all the law became our saviour. You can trust in yourself as one who cannot keep the ten commandments, thinking you’re ok, or you can trust Christ and be saved.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
