Morning Devotion: Read Exodus 12

Exodus 12:7  And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Exodus 12:13  And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

God is very interested in the welfare of His own people. Here in Exodus chapters 9-14 we find the king of Egypt being entreated to let Israel go from the bondage by which they were subjugated.

Remember, God brought Israel to Egypt to preserve their lives. Read about that in Genesis chapters 37 - 50. They were in Egypt 430 years and grew an prospered. Then the king of Egypt saw that they had grown to many people and put them in bondage where they served with rigour (Exodus 1:13-14).

God sent Moses to Pharaoh to facilitate the release of Israel from their plight and bondage. Pharaoh would not listen but instead hardened his heart against God and Moses. After 12 plagues were brought upon Egypt Pharaoh relented and let the people go.

The final plague brought death to the first born of every household that believed not God. The bible teaches us that the culmination of sin is death (James 1:15).

In our text and in preparation for this final judgment God had those who believed in Him slay a lamb and place the blood of that sacrifice upon the sides of the door posts and at the top of the door jam and placed the bowl that contained the blood at the bottom, the bason. It was a picture of the cross. It was a demonstration of what God would do with His Son Jesus on Calvary’s cross.

Exodus 12:22  And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. 23  For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

Pharaoh’s heart was hard against God and against His people Israel. God moved in such a way as to use that hardness of heart to bring Him glory.

Every person who listened and did as instructed and placed the blood on the door jams, believing God, were saved, every one! Those who did not, were destroyed. When the Lord passed through the land that night every house that had the blood on the door post had life and those who didn’t have it suffered death.

My friend, what happened then was a picture of Calvary’s cross. Jesus died on Calvary’s cross and shed his blood; He is the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. He shed his blood to pay for your sin and mine.

Every one who believes in Jesus and His efficacious work and shed blood on Calvary’s cross will be saved and have life forever and all those who do not believe will suffer death, forever.

My friend, is your heart hard toward the things of God?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
