Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Jesus Healed a Centurion's Servant

Luke 7:1  Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 2  And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. 3  And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. 4  And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: 5  For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. 6  Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: 7  Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. 8  For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 9  When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 10  And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

A Centurion was more then a Roman soldier, he was an officer over at least one hundred men. He had a servant who was dear to him and sick to the point of death.

Notice the centurion had good relationships with the Jews and sent the elders of the Jews to Jesus.

There was recently a mosaic discovered during an excavation of Kfar Othnay. The mosaic was within a Roman hall measuring 16 by 32 feet across. What is interesting is that the mosaic was believed to be made by a centurion. The mosaic declared Jesus to be God. It was in the midst of the Christian worship hall and during a time when Christians were being persecuted. The Sixth Ironclad Legion was stationed nearby when the mosaic was laid. Imagine a Roman Centurion being a witness for Jesus declaring Jesus to be God at risk of his own life.

Here in our text we find a centurion who heard about Jesus and sent representatives to Him for help.

While Jesus was on His way to help this servant the centurion sent a messenger to stop the Lord for he felt unworthy and yet believed in the power of God.

Luke 7:6  Then Jesus went with them.

God honours humility and faith. James 4:6  But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

James 4:10  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

There was no pride of station or demand of action from this Centurion, He simply trusted the Lord and His word.

Are you humbly trusting in the Lord? Are you humbly trusting by faith what the Lord can do in your life, or do you demand of God?

The Lord Jesus made a great and yet sad statement to those who followed  Him.

Luke 7:9  When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

As a follower of Jesus, do you have a humble faith in Jesus? or, do the testimony of others prove your faith to be week?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
