Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 20:25  It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

Ecclesiastes 5:4  When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5  Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. 6  Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? 7  For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.

There is great caution given here by thew Word of the Lord. If a man or woman devours that which is holy and does not think it through and acts and makes promises without consideration of the consequences, they are in trouble with God.

To devour is to consume or enjoy with avidity. To eat up; to eat with greediness without counting the cost; to eat ravenously, as a beast of prey, or as a hungry man. To destroy spiritually; to ruin the soul.

It is dangerous to devour that which is holy and then question what you did after you already committed to the Lord. Jephthah is a good example of just that.

Judges 11:30  And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, 31  Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering. 32  So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands. 33  And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. 34  And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter. 35  And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

Howe many have said, Lord I will do this or that if you do something for me and never follow through. When you do that, you have devoured that which is holy never questioning the end result with God.

I am reminded of the parable of the seed and the sower in Matthew chapter thirteen. There are four types of soils representing the heart of man and their relationship with God and the Words of God. The second part of that illustration is the person who “anon with joy” receives the word of God and then because of persecution or trial or divergence quickly leaves because they were never grounded in God’s word. That phrase “anon with joy” means to quickly without having any depth; they superficially or emotionally receive God’s word. That is what the modern religious world does. That is how they get people to make decisions that have no real value in salvation or in relationship with God.

Matthew 13:20  But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21  Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

There many, many people in this case, they receive the Word of God without repentance and eventually get offended because of the word they received and the persecution it brought. That word offended means to transgress God’s law, to leave God. They were never really saved in the first place.

1John 2:19  They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Proverbs 20:25  It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

The choice is still yours,
