Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 20:27  The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Zechariah 12:1c tells us that the LORD forms the spirit in man. “… the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.”

1Corinthians 2:11a  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?

In our text we find that the spirit of man is the vessel which holds the candle of the LORD. The name “LORD” is the name Jehovah in the Hebrew language. You are a living vessel with the spirit of the LORD, the light, the candle of the LORD which gives you physical life.

The Lord is the light of life which give life to every person. John 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Each and every man and woman knows what is acceptable with God for God has given His light of life. In other words, man knows what is right and what is wrong because God instilled it in them. Whether they acknowledge that or not is up to them.

Unless that person is turned to being a reprobate by God, because that man or woman refused to acknowledge God, they, intrinsically know the truth. I hope you are not reprobate.

Romans 1:28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Titus 1:16  They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

When God formed man in the garden of Eden He breathed life into man and man became a living soul. God gave man the spirit of life.

Genesis 2:7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

With that in mind let’s look as the second part of today’s verse.

Proverbs 20:27  The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

The Light God gives you is the very light that searches you. It is the light that searches all the inward parts of the belly. No, it does not mean that God looks at your intestines. It means that God searches your desires.

The word belly is indicative of the description of your inward desires and motives. God searches those things. He searches why you do what you do.

Philippians 3:18  (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19  Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

I was exactly like that before Jesus saved my soul. My earthly desire was the very thing that guided me until Jesus saved my soul and gave me that living spirit. He quickened me, made me alive in Christ.

Ephesians 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Are you living with a dead spirit or are you a believer with a wonderful living spirit regenerated and rejuvenated by God through our Lord Jesus Christ?

Proverbs 20:27  The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

My friend, Jesus can change your motives and desires and give you a renewed and living spirit if you will repent; stop trusting in yourself, and let Jesus save you.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
