Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 21:25  The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. 26  He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.

There is much to be said about the slothful man in the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 12:24  The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

Proverbs 12:27  The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

Proverbs 15:19  The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

Proverbs 18:9  He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

Proverbs 19:24  A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

In this text the idea is that the slothful person wants and desires and tries every conceivable way to obtain without working. If someone provides for him, he will take it and use it until he needs more; he becomes dependent upon the work of others and covets greedily. Some entities operate on this level creating a group of dependents that can then be manipulated. Eventually the whole process “killeth" the slothful.

Proverbs 21:25  The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. 26  He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.

The righteous are much different, they work to prepare and provide for those to whom they are responsible like their families and others who are genuinely in need.

Proverbs 10:16  The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

Proverbs 13:11  Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

Proverbs  14:23  In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

There is honour in good honest labour for oneself and ones family.

What are you known for, good honest labour, or slothful dependency on others? Are you lazy expecting others to give, give, give? Or, are you righteous in your labour and work?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
