Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
A friend, a good friend will be that one who sharpen you. He will cause you to discern through discourse. He will give conversation that will sharpen your wits and bring you to a place of agreeable enlightenment and understanding.
It is the iron file that sharpens the iron knife. So the true friend will, by way of discourse whether for or against, encourage or discourage his friend to make fine sharp decisions in life.
The iron file makes the knife smooth and sharp and bright fit for use whereas the dull and rough knife is of little use. Nobody wants a dull knife.
The caution is to be careful with whom you find discourse because the influence can either make you sharp for the better or dull for the worse.
The caution is for you as you commit to dialog with a friend, do you sharpen your friend to better or do you make your friend dull and unattractive by wrong counsel?
There is one friend and one counsellor that you can always trust.
Psalm 16:7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Psalm 73:24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
As we have already seen in this chapter, good counsel rejoices the heart.
Proverbs 27:9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
I am very grateful for our church, there are many friends of which I enjoy discourse for their conversation and counsel make me sharper and I trust they experience the same sharpening from me as well.
Today, try to sharpen the countenance of your friend in a positive, fruitful, encouraging way that leads to righteousness.
