Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 27:23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. 24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? 25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. 26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. 27 And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.
God’s word is replete with instructions and guidance for all aspects of life. here in our text we find the Lord teaching us finances and priorities in our spending and work habits.
In high school, we hand a class called general math. We were taught to be diligent in knowing the state of our finances. We were taught how to keep a check book and how to reconcile differences making sure our bills were paid and our savings account was increasing and our sustenance was there for life.
We were taught how to balance our finances and our holdings. We were taught priorities in our spending habits. We were taught that you cannot or should not spend more than what you earn. Extending yourself on credit was not wise because credit would often allow you to spend money you did not have placing you in debt to another person.
A person who is diligent to know the state of their flocks and herds, (meaning resources and finances including investments and holdings) was a person who would be satisfied with food, clothing and housing.
In verse 24 we were are that the crown does not endure forever but the person who looks well to their own and plods on systemically and constantly will have what they need.
In verse 25 we are taught that there is a time of gathering when the tender grass and herbs grow and become food when they are gathered.
There is no time for indiscretion and unfettered spending, it will leave you struggling for stability and sustenance. There is no time for slothfulness when there is harvest work to be done. Be diligent at work, whatever your job is.
2Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
This same advice applies to our spiritual lives as well.
2Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
As you read the word of God the spirit of God is there to guide you into all truth helping you make application of God’s word to your personal life.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
We see this very thing being taught in our text as we apply our finances and the care of them to God’s word.
Are you prepared for eternity? Have you considered your state with God? Now is the time.
2Corinthians 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
