Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - The Cross Identified

Exodus 12:7  And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 8  And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9  Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. 10  And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. 11  And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover. 12  For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. 13  And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Exodus 12:22  And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

Remember, this portion of scripture is a pinnacle of the book or Exodus and an anchor for the Christian. Here we find the break from the Egyptian worship and from the law of Hammurabi which came out of Babylon. The focus is given directly to God through the blood and the cross and is a picture of Christ.

Romans 15:4  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Notice verse seven:  “And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.”

The blood of the lamb (remember, Jesus is the Lamb of God) and strike it on the two side posts of the door frame. Then they were to take the blood and strike it on the upper post, the top of the door frame. In Exodus twelve verse twenty two, we find the blood was also in the bason, the door’s threshold.

The two side post and the upper post and the threshold had blood applied. Picture that in your mind, blood applied on each of the sides and the top and bottom of the door. The applied blood is a perfect picture of the cross.

God was revealing the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross to the Hebrews long before Jesus came to this earth. He was revealing the purpose of the shed blood as well.

Hebrews 9:22  And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Did you see that in Revelation chapter one verse five? We, the believers, are washed in the blood of Christ, not the water of baptism. It’s the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanseth us from all sin.

The picture of the cross is the focal point where Christ shed His blood.

Colossians 1:20  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

My friend, Jesus shed his blood on Calvary’s cross to pay for your sins and my sins. The bible is replete with this wonderful truth of Jesus Christ through word pictures, through demonstrations such as we have here, and through the actual shedding of blood and the death of Christ Himself. The lamb had to die to shed his blood.

With all this, why would anyone not believe?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
