Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Feast of Unleavened Bread

Exodus 12:15  Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 16  And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. 17  And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. 18  In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 19  Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. 20  Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.

Our Lord instituted the feast of unleavened bread at the same time He had Israel place the blood of the lamb on the door casing. The Israelites were to eat the bread with the roasted lamb. They were to do so being ready to move on a moments notice.

Leaven is what we call yeast or fermentation of bread. Leaven is a picture of sin. As one author said: “Leaven is the principle of evil.”

Leaven is that which permeates the whole of which it is placed. If it is in bread the whole loaf is permitted with leaven. If it represents the principle of evil the whole person is permeated with evil.

A little sin ruins the whole person or a little leaven ruins the whole lump.

1Corinthians 5:6  Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 7  Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:  Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Galatians 5:9  A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

When it comes to religion Jesus tells the disciples to beware of the leaven the corruption of the religious world. It fills the whole world.

Matthew 16:6  Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Matthew 16:11  How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

In our text, Israel was to forgo leaven for seven days. (Seven represents the number of completion.) A whole week they were to eat no leaven, yeast or anything like it.

This feast of unleavened bread was to be eaten with the lamb the same night in which they had slain the lamb and placed the blood on the door posts.

This ceremony was to be kept all their generations. It is called the passover feast.

Exodus 12:11  And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.

The Lord kept the passover meal just before He was crucified.

Luke 22:15  And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16  For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18  For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19  And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Now you know why we have the Lord’s Supper at church. We do so to REMEMBER the Lord’s death till He comes. We do so to REMEMBER the Lamb of God’s death till He come.

Have you placed your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
