Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Confession is God divinely appointed method of giving the believer a secure and restful conscience. I say, the believer not the unsaved.
There are many who confess their sins and never receive mercy for they are not a child of the king. Religion has taken this idea of confession and applied it to the lost person. Religion has made confessionals (a booth where people sit on one side of a wall with a screen dividing them from a priest) where one can confess their sins to another man rather than God thereby appeasing the anguish of their soul while never making reconciliation with God.
There is no man on earth that can forgive your sins with respect to God the Father, no man. All men are sinners. Don’t let religious zealots fool you into thinking they are the answer. The Word of God is the answer.
With that being said, there is room for confession when you sin against your bother or sister. There is room for mercy.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
When that happens, we are to exercise mercy and forgiveness toward those who have offended us.
Matthew 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Never come to a point in your life where you believe you have no need for confession.
Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Our verse tells us that one who covers their sin will not prosper. The understanding is this. You will not prosper because you cannot cover your sins with God. He knows and He rewards. You may cover your sins with man, never with God. It is with God that prosperity or the lack thereof belongs.
It is with God that you find mercy.
Jesus gave us an illustration of such: Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Christian, you have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. In that capacity you can find mercy and forgiveness.
1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
My unsaved friend, the only mercy you will ever have is to place your faith and trust in Jesus the Saviour of the world.
1Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
