Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 15:30  The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. 31  The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. 32  He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. 33  The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

How does light in the eye rejoice the heart?

My friend, there is one light that rejoiceth the heart and that is Jesus.

Jesus said in John 12:46  “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”

1John 1:5  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6  If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Matthew 6:22  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

As our text says, the person who hears such reproof and responds to the Lord’s will, will have true light; those who don’t literally despise their own soul: the person who despiseth their own soul is the person who has little understanding of the true nature of God.

The light of the gospel of Jesus Christ is salvation. Those who refuse, for whatever reason, are in darkness.

2Corinthians 4:3  But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The term “gospel” means good news. It is good news that rejoiceth heart of those who through humility receive it. Here is the gospel:

1Corinthians 15:1  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Romans 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

2Timothy 1:10  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

When a person believes the gospel he is given true light and that my friend rejoices the heart.

Philippians 4:4  Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
