Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 14:5  A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies. 6  A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth. 7  Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

What is a witness?

1. Testimony; attestation of a fact or event.

John 5:31  If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

2. That which furnishes evidence or proof.  It is like a contract or covenant with another person, organization or corporation.

Laban said, this heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Genesis 31:44. (Laban set up stones in a heap as a sign, a witness between him and Jacob his son-in-law.)

3. A person who knows or sees any thing; one personally present; as, he was witness; he was an eye-witness. Peter saw the sufferings of Christ and gave witness.

1Peter 5:1  The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:.

The apostle John spoke as a witness of Jesus.

1John 1:1  That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2  (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

There can be false witnesses, or, as our text tells us, there are a lying witnesses. One of the ten commandments is not to be false witness.

Exodus 20:16  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

In the case of our Lord Jesus Christ and His encounter with the religions of the day they brought forth false witnesses agains the Lord.

Matthew 26:59  Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60  But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,

When speaking to others about Jesus, be the true witness, be the one who speaks the truth.

Proverbs 14:25  A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

Jesus never, ever lied, never gave a false statement and never embellished anything to make himself look good. You know how that works; people will tell their side of the story about another person or incident making themselves look good or right while making the other person look bad. That is a false witness.

You may encounter scorners who cannot understand and those who are foolish; don’t let that stop you from being a true witness.

By the way, not only do your words give witness but your actions give witness as well.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
