Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Moses flees to Midian
Exodus 2:10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. 11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
Moses as an infant being discovered in a small boat called an ark of bullrushes, was taken in by the daughter of Pharaoh. Unknown to her, she gave the child to his own mother to be a nursed. Jochobed, Moses’ mother probably nursed the child for about a year maybe two and then gave Moses back to Pharaoh’s daughter.
Acts 7:21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. 23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
Moses was raised for forty years in the house of Pharaoh and learned in the Egyptian’s school. He learned all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was mighty in words and deeds. He was an intelligent guy. He was well versed in all the ways of the Egyptians. He was also a Hebrew and he knew his heritage.
One day while visiting his brethren he saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew brother. Moses stepped in and delivered the Hebrew.
Exodus 2:12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
It may seem that Moses did wrong when he looked this way and that, but the bible clears up the situation when we find he was defending his fellow Hebrew.
Acts 7:24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
Two things happened after defending the innocent. His own brethren rejected him and Pharaoh sought him.
Exodus 2:13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? 14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. 15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
What’s the point today? Sometimes doing right does not look right in the eyes of others. What do we do? We do right anyways.
1Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
The Lord’s eye are upon the righteous and His ears are open to their prayers. The Lord’s eyes were upon Moses as he struggled through trying times.
My friend, God’s eyes are upon you as well. Would you trust Him in your life?
The choice is still yours,
