Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - The Burning Bush

Exodus 3:1  Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3  And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4  And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5  And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6  Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

How old do you suppose Moses was when he visited Israel?

Acts 7:22  And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. 23  And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

Acts 7:30  And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

He was forty years in Egypt, and forty years in the dessert making Moses eighty years old when God spoke to him through the burning bush.

God can use anyone at any age and at any time if they would simply give themselves to God. God can use you if you are willing.

We also see that God can reveal Himself in many different ways. Imagine a burning bush that is not consumed with fire with a voice emitting from it.

Exodus 3:2  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3  And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

Certainly this anomaly caused curiosity which drew Moses to see the bush.

What Moses soon found was that he was in the presence of God.

Exodus 3:4  And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5  And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Acts 7:31  When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, 32  Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. 33  Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

Whenever you are in the presence of God, consider yourself to be in the presence of Holiness.

That brings us to a very important point. We as New Testament believers have the great privilege to go to the presence of God at any time. It is a place of Holy ground. We go to Him as we read His word, and we go to Him in prayer. When we are in prayer we are literally in the presence of God and have entered into the throne room of grace.

The throne room of grace is only accessible through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. There is no other way. Jesus is our great High Priest who gave us that privilege.

Hebrews 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

When you pray, do you pray knowing you are in the presence of Holiness?

Have you placed you faith and trust in Jesus to save your soul and give you the privilege to pray to God?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
