Morning Devotion: Read Exodus

Exodus 6:6  Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: 7  And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8  And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD. 9  And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

“But they hearkened not unto Moses for the anguish of spirit, and cruel bondage.”

How often do the circumstances of life, the problems of life, the trials of life and the hardships take your eyes off from the Lord?

Anguish, as a transitive verb, means to distress with extreme pain or grief. Applying that spiritually means the heart and soul is in distress with extreme pain or grief.

Psalm 119:143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.

Psalm 119:107  I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.

Do you see the difference between Israel and David and how they responded to trouble.

Israel had it backwards. Moses gave them the word of God which should have been a comfort to them and they hearkened not.

David had trials and trouble and found comfort in the scriptures.

Psalm 119:50  This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

The word of God quickened David, it made him alive again. It rejuvenated David and gave him strength to move forward to continue in trusting in the Lord.

“But they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.”

Instead of turning away from God in times of trial, turn toward God and let His word be your comfort.

Too many people give up when the going gets tough. Too many people abandon the only source of help and sink deeper and deeper into anguish of spirit.

Instead of rejecting and blaming and accusing God, draw nigh to God and let Him help your through whatever you are going through.

Hebrews 10:22  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2Corinthians 5:7  (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

The choice is still yours,
