Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Pharaoh Subjugates Israel
Exodus 1:8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. 9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: 10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. 11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
Over the course of time, history is often forgotten. Here we find the new king of Egypt, possibly a new dynasty altogether.
This new king did not know Joseph, certainly not personally and possibly not even historically. New dynasties often bring with them their own manner of thinking and seldom rely on historical facts choosing to establish their own rule.
The new ruler Rameses I and later Rameses II were very concerned over their state and the country for they had enemies like the Hittites and Syria.
Their concern over Israel was the prosperity and the size or amount of people there were. All they could see was an enemy within and enemies without.
The bible says in verses 9 and 10: βAnd he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.β
The Egyptians were concerned over Israel that their might and prosperity would take over and they might even depart, leaving them a destitute economy vulnerable on many fronts.
We saw the same things with Jesus. The Pharisees and Sadducees saw the prosperity of Jesus and it moved them to envy.
Matthew 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.
Mark 11:18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
John 12:19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
Mark 15:10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.
The end result was that Israel was redeemed and Egypt was left destitute. The ned result for us is that we are and will be redeemed and Jesus will return. We, the believers win in the end.
Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
