Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 24:15  Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: 16  For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief

The wicked, the unsaved and even those professing to be saved, often lay wait for the righteous marking their steps eventually hoping to make spoil of their resting place or of their securities.

The righteous are or should be aware of such practices. King David realized it as read in Psalms 56:6. “They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.”

Psalms 57:6  They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.

Jeremiah knew this was taking place.  Jeremiah 20:10  For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

Even Jesus had those who marked His steps and sought to find something to accuse Him with.

Luke 20:20  And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

In our text God warns the wicked about such activities. Proverbs 24:15  Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: 16  For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

David, and Jeremiah, and Daniel, and Jesus and many others stood in righteousness regardless of what the wicked did.  Yes, sometimes the righteous fall, but they get back up. Why? They were motivated by righteousness and the righteous, Jesus Christ and God’s wonderful word.

Notice the phrase “but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” I am reminded of those who waited on Daniel and watched him and set him up using his practice of prayer. Read Daniel chapter 6.

Daniel 6:4  Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5  Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

They succeeded in their effort and eventually had Daniel thrown into a den of lions. God sent an angel and protected Daniel in the den of lions.

The sad part is that those who accused Daniel were caught and they were thrown into the same den of lions.

Daniel 6:22  My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

I am also reminded of those who deceived Jesus eventually putting Him on the cross of Calvary. While many of those people suffered because they never placed their faith and trust in the Lord, others were eventually saved.

Jesus prayed for those who performed such wickedness. Luke 23:34  Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do…

In Acts chapter two, three thousand of those dear souls trusted in Jesus.

My believing friend, when the wicked lay wait, just keep on keeping on for Jesus. God will take care for the rest. Maybe someone will see your faithfulness and turn to Jesus.

2Chronicles 16:9a  For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
