Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 24:30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; 31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. 32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. 33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
Proverbs 6:10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Proverbs 20:4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Can there be anything more plain than to read theses words concerning the slothful, the sluggard, the lazy person.
Nothing is always accomplished by doing nothing.
An important principle is established in our text; being slothful, lazy or being a sluggard results in poverty. Poverty makes itself apparent in an untimely manner appearing as one in travel. (Have you ever had trouble while traveling? Maybe your car broke down on the side of the road or engine problems stopped you causing great consternation.) poverty also appears as a soldier in full armour. Meaning the poverty manifests itself as a daunting unstoppable soldier ready for battle. When it appears it’s too late.
What’s the solution? Get to work.
2Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
The field and the vineyard must be worked to yield any fruit. The soil must be prepared, the seed must be planted, the weeds must be kept down and the crop must be gathered. The vineyard must first be planted and the mature vine must be pruned and nurtured before a good yield is gathered. All this takes work. No work, no yield, no work brings no revenue and poverty ensues.
I am reminded of Joni Eareckson Tada, a woman who became quadriplegic paralyzed from the shoulders down after diving into a shallow swimming pool.
Joni was never a sluggard despite her malady. She went on to accomplish great things establishing business, writing music, serving the on several medical boards for the U.S. Government. She has her own daily radio broadcast and paints using her mouth to hold the brush.
If anyone were to have an excuse to become slothful she had it. However, she decided to work and accomplish great things for God instead of sitting in misery and making excuses.
Everyone has a choice.
Do you make excuses for letting your field go fallow?
The choice is still yours,
