Morning Devotion; Read Luke - On the Road to Emmaus
Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
What may seem destitute and hopeless to these men was nothing more than a lack of knowledge concerning the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and the coming kingdom.
These two men had a partial understanding of what had taken place.
Jesus, our risen Lord, chose to walk with these men to Emmaus. These two men who might have been insignificant to others was significant to the Lord. God chose these two men to communicate a great truth.
Normally one would not notice two men walking down a road; it was quite common back then. But God saw their need and chose to walk with them and reveal Himself to them. He chose these two men to give them the truth of His resurrection.
God not only wants the world to know about salvation; for Jesus came into he world to save sinners: God want the individual to know. He wants you to know.
God wanted their understanding to be clear. They thought that Jesus would immediately bring in the kingdom but his death had stopped it all and hope was gone.
Luke 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
All the Jews were and are still looking for their redeemer. They thought the Messiah would bring in the kingdom (the millennial kingdom). He will bring in the kingdom. But not like they thought at that time.
The disciples asked the question in the book of Acts.
Acts 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
What was the Lord’s answer?
Acts 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
We know that the kingdom will be restored when Jesus returns at the end of the tribulation period. Until then we are to be busy about the Lord’s business.
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
These men were sad because of the events that had happened. They could not see God at work in His own timing.
My friend, take heart, the Lord will set up His kingdom, until then we have to be about the Lord’s work and be witnesses for Him.
We know that the rapture must happen first (that is when the Lord will call His believers home), then the tribulation period of seven years will take place. After the tribulation Jesus will return and set up His kingdom.
The big question is this: Are you born-again? Where are you in God’s plan?
The choice is still yours,
