Morning Devotion: Read Luke

Luke 24:25  Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26  Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27  And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28  And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29  But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30  And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 31  And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32  And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? 33  And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 34  Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. 35  And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

Not knowing that Jesus had risen from the dead, but only hearing rummers of such, Cleopas and his friend struggle in their hearts of over recent events.

Jesus, who has the answers to all things, drew close to them and walked with them. He asked why they were downtrodden. The explained the rumours and revealed their doubt about the future.

In our text we see the Lord Jesus giving them exactly what they needed, hope.

We see the Lord first giving admonishment as he says: “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?”

(These events were supposed to happen.)

I wonder how many are foolish in their thinking not believing God’s word. I wonder how many doubt and are slow of heart when it comes to God and His will. I wonder how many do not know the scriptures and do not know the God of the bible.

Notice, Jesus took them directly to the scriptures and explained them from the Old Testament up until that moment what the bible said about Him.

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”

I am reminded about Luke 16 where a man in hell sought salvation for his living brothers.

Luke 16:27  Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28  For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29  Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30  And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31  And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

“They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” In other words, they have God’s word, let them hear God’s word.

If you do not believe God’s word, you are in serious trouble.

The man in hell attempts to make the case of one going to his brothers after one had risen from the dead.

My friend, Jesus did rise from the dead and He is alive today and He is the living word of God. Would you hear and believe?

Cleopas and his friend eventually believed: “And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.”
Are your eyes opened to the truth; do you know what God’s word says about Jesus?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
