Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 18:3  When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach. 4  The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. 5  It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

The Proverbs reveal so much about men, about you as well. The scriptures have a truth, that, when contemplated upon, gives us great insight into ourselves and about those around us.

The scriptures reveal much about the wicked man or woman. Are you wicked?

Wicked means - 1. Evil in principle or practice; deviating from the divine law; addicted to vice; sinful; immoral. This is a word of comprehensive signification, extending to every thing that is contrary to the moral law, and both to persons and actions. We say, a wicked man, a wicked deed, wicked ways, wicked lives, a wicked heart, wicked designs, wicked works. (Websters Dictionary 1828)

Nobody likes to consider themselves wicked because they don’t do the big sins like murder, rape and stealing. When in fact wickedness is a simple departure from God’s moral law. God tells us not to lie, yet everyone has lied. That makes all men liars and wicked. It’s not murder or rape or stealing, it’s just a lie. Yet, even then, it is a departure from God’s divine moral law.

With that in mind let’s look at our text again.

Let’s use the little word lie or liar or deception as we evaluate the verses. When the liar comes then there is contempt and with ignominy reproach.

Ignominy means - Public disgrace; shame; reproach; dishonor; infamy. Their generals have been received with honor after their defeat; yours with ignominy after conquest.

The words we speak should be a wellspring of wisdom like a flowing brook, not ignominy and not with reproach.

Verse 5 tells us it is not good to accept the wicked, nor their words, because they lead to the over throw of the righteous.

Eventually and even now, many follow the pernicious lies of the wicked leading to destruction as told in the book of revelation.

Revelation 18:23  And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. (This verse speaks of the destruction of commercial Babylon one world system of economics; prior to that they deceived the world.)

The word sorceries is the greek word pharmacia where we get our word pharmacy. Do you know of anyone who has been deceived into accepting a world wide distributed pharmacia? Do you know of nations who have been deceived by the same rhetoric?

Now let’s do the same thing with religion. Do you know of anyone who has been deceived into a false religion or denomination?  2Peter 2:2  And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

Proverbs 18:5  It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment. (To accept a lie is to be deceived.)

When you hear, or read, or see any information about anything, please compare it with the word of God. The word of God will reveal truth about all things. The wicked will be revealed, the righteous will be instructed and the Lord will be exalted.

Acts 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

One day ignominy and reproach will be doled out and the Lord will repay the wicked to his face.

Would you listen to the wellspring of wisdom? Proverbs 18: 4  The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Have you violated God’s divine moral law even a little bit?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
