Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs - The Drunkard

Proverbs 23:29  Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? 30  They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. 31  Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. 32  At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. 33  Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. 34  Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. 35  They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

We have before us a complete description of the person who drinks alcohol. Let’s explain the passage.

Proverbs 23:29  Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

The person who is a drunk is the person who speaks of woeful things. In their stupor they weep and cry for sorrow, they fight; oh how easy it is for a drunk to want to fight. They babble and say things without understanding. They have wounds without cause - Meaning they abuse themselves for no reason. They have red eyes and maybe their noses are red as well.

30  They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

All the above things happen when a person seeks it. This person stays at the bottle and the bar always seeking more drink, more wine. I wonder how many folks have alcohol on their weekly shopping list as they go to seek it?

31  Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

Here is a portion of scripture that many Christian do not see. God says, when it ferments, moves aright, DON’T EVEN LOOK AT IT!

Yet, how many churches say it’s ok to drink and allow for social drinking all the while saying they love Jesus. There is no such thing as social drinking in the eyes of God. In fact the Lord says, “look not.”

32  At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

The bitterness of alcohol and the stinging of it is a death nell as the adder when he strikes. I personally know of people who have died from sclerosis of the liver from drinking. What about those who have died from accidents and fights and from incurable alcoholic ulcers? Oh, my friend, it certainly does sting like an adder.

33  Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Perverseness of both the eyes and the mouth accompany this vile substance. Men see women with lust when they are drunk, the same with women. How many rendezvous have been made at the bar or concert when people are drunk only to end up with STDs? How many marriages have been broken because of this type of action?

34  Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

This verse describes the bed spins of people who are drunk. Spinning and vomiting always seem to go together.

35  They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

The drunkard seldom feels their physical pain when fighting. When they awake they remember very little of past events.

“I will seek it yet again” is addiction.

Jesus never ever drank alcohol nor did He make alcohol and the wedding of Cana. Read John chapter 2 very closely.

Any alcohol in the communion is like saying Jesus’ blood was full of alcohol symbolizing Jesus as a drunk. Any church that does such a thing is blaspheming Christ. Leave that church as fast as you can.

Proverbs 20:1  Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Just the thought of believing alcohol is ok means you have been deceived and are not wise.

Job 28:28  And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

The choice is still yours,
