Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - Materials for the Tabernacle

Exodus 38:21  This is the sum of the tabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, son to Aaron the priest. 22  And Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses. 23  And with him was Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen. 24  All the gold that was occupied for the work in all the work of the holy place, even the gold of the offering, was twenty and nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 25  And the silver of them that were numbered of the congregation was an hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and threescore and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: 26  A bekah for every man, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that went to be numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men. 27  And of the hundred talents of silver were cast the sockets of the sanctuary, and the sockets of the vail; an hundred sockets of the hundred talents, a talent for a socket. 28  And of the thousand seven hundred seventy and five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their chapiters, and filleted them. 29  And the brass of the offering was seventy talents, and two thousand and four hundred shekels. 30  And therewith he made the sockets to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the brasen altar, and the brasen grate for it, and all the vessels of the altar, 31  And the sockets of the court round about, and the sockets of the court gate, and all the pins of the tabernacle, and all the pins of the court round about.

In our text we see the materials provided for the Tabernacle.

The gold for the furniture and the instruments, of the tabernacle were twenty nine talents and thirty shekels. The weight of a talent in our measurements was 75.558 pounds. Multiply 75.558 times 29 and you have 2,191.182 pounds of gold converted to ounces you have 35058.912. The shekel was .20 ounces by our measurements. Multiply .20 ounces by 30 and you have another 6 ounces. All together you have 35,064.912 ounces of Gold. At current prices today the would amount to $4,600.00 an ounce. That would make the total price of gold for the tabernacle $161,298,595.00, that’s one hundred sixty one billion two hundred ninety eight million five hundred ninety five dollars worth of gold. (My calculations might be off a bit.)

The silver was 100 talents and 775 shekels. That would result in 7,706.80 ounces of Silver. Silver by todays standards is valued at $53.398 dollars per ounce. That would make the total value the silver donated at $411,527.70, four hundred eleven thousand five hundred twenty seven dollars and seventy cents.

There was given seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels of brass. At current prices brass is worth $2.30 per ounce. Their offering would amount to 5,769.06 ounces of brass. At current prices that would be $13, 268.83 dollars worth of brass.

All added together would make the offering to God for the tabernacle $161,723,391.53. U.S currency or $226,412,748.14 Canadian currency.

My friend the worth of a soul is very valuable to God. To build this tabernacle with the cost thereof is nothing when it comes to salvation.

Matthew 16:26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Psalm 49:6  They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; 7  None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: 8  (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

1Peter 1:18  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21  Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

All aspects of the tabernacle, the courtyard, the articles in it, the tabernacle itself, the instruments in it, and even the offerings and worship conducted therein reveal Christ. It is all about Christ. The value of Christ is more than the whole world can give for He made the world.

My friend, do you know Christ Jesus our Lord?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
