Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - The Table of Showbread
Exodus 25:23 Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. 24 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about. 25 And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about. 26 And thou shalt make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that are on the four feet thereof. 27 Over against the border shall the rings be for places of the staves to bear the table. 28 And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them. 29 And thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and spoons thereof, and covers thereof, and bowls thereof, to cover withal: of pure gold shalt thou make them. 30 And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.
The tabernacle is the place where God dwelt and the glory of God filled it. The Ark of the covenant also called the Ark of Testimony (because that is where God’s ten commandments were kept) had upon it the Mercy seat.
The Ark of God is representative of God’s final authority, it is the ultimate place where man meets with God either for redemption or judgment. No one escapes the meeting with God.
The Ark represents our need to be totally surrendered to God as we will all one day meet our sovereign.
The Mercy seat is the place where we find our only hope for it is by the mercy of God that we are saved. The Mercy seat was made of pure gold, not wood overlaid with gold. It was made of pure gold representing the deity of God.
Inside the tabernacle, in the Holy Place there are three other pieces of furniture, the table of showbread, the lamp stand and the altar of incense.
The table of show bread represents our Lord Jesus Christ who is the Bread of Life. It was the place where they kept the bread of the offerings. Not only is Jesus the Bread of Life He is our sustenance as well. Bread is sustenance and bread is life.
John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
John 6:48 I am that bread of life.
John 6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
When we started this study in the book of Exodus we found that God provided manna for the people. They ate of the manna and were sustained with life.
Exodus 16:14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.
Jesus is the bread of life, the table of shewbread reminded them, and us, that Jesus is the bread of life.
(Let me remind you that Jesus is received by faith not physically. Some religions have you taking communion making you believe it is the actual body of Christ. Don’t fall for it.)
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
My Christian friend, are you sustained in you relationship with Christ? Let the bread of God be your sustaining factor in life.
The choice is still yours,
Pastor Cook
