Morning Devotion: Read Exodus - The Sin and Burnt Offering

Exodus 29:10  And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock. 11  And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 12  And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock, and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger, and pour all the blood beside the bottom of the altar. 13  And thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul that is above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar. 14  But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.

The sin offering was to make an atonement for the priest. Every person, no matter what office they hold, is a sinner. Aaron and his sons had to have an offering made for them and their sins. They could not participate in the service of the LORD and of others if their own sins were not taken care of.

Notice in verse ten, they had to lay their hands on the head of the animal. Laying hands of the head of the bullock was a confession of sin on their part. They knew they were sinners in need of a sacrifice. It was a confession knowing they deserved to die for their own sins. The animal was burnt outside of the camp indicating their sins were removed.

Likewise there was the burnt offering.  Exodus 29:15  Thou shalt also take one ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram. 16  And thou shalt slay the ram, and thou shalt take his blood, and sprinkle it round about upon the altar. 17  And thou shalt cut the ram in pieces, and wash the inwards of him, and his legs, and put them unto his pieces, and unto his head. 18  And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

The burnt offering is the oldest offering known in the bible. Noah made this offering after coming off the ark after the global flood which destroyed all the rest of mankind. Abraham made this offering even when tested by God in Genesis twenty two. Even Able, in Genesis chapter four, brought his offering before the LORD. His offing included the fat giving us an indication that it was a burnt offering.

Genesis 4:4  And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

Notice, God had respect to unto Able’s offering.

The burnt offering is a picture of Christ’s death for you and for me. He is our substitute our payment our saviour. The atonement of Jesus was a sweet smelling savour to God.

Exodus 29:18  And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Ephesians 5:2  And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

The point this morning is this: If you are unwilling to see yourself as a sinner confessing your sin before God and PLACING YOUR FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS who sacrificed Himself for you, then are not saved.

Romans 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11  For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
