Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 30:7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
Yesterday we covered the first part of this passage where Agur (who wrote this Proverb) desired of God remove vanity and lies from his life. Are you a liar? Do you utter lies?
One of the ten commandments is “thou shalt not bear false witness;” we say, don’t lie.
Lying is a very big part of our culture; I once heard a police officer say, all men are liars. In saying that he, unknowingly included himself. King David said basically the same thing. Psalms 116:11 I said in my haste, All men are liars.
Although he said that in haste it may not be true for the believer in Christ Jesus. We say many things in haste without giving forethought to our words.
However, we must agree that lying is pervasive in our society.
Agur did not want to be associated with such practice; he wanted no vanity in his life and did not want to be found a liar.
Let me say this, changing ones mind does not make one a liar. I have had to change my mind when circumstances dictate. On our church calendar I write, “Some of the above dates may change.” This is because circumstances change, scenarios, change and people’s needs change. It does not make one a liar.
What is a lie? “A criminal falsehood; a falsehood uttered for the purpose of deception; an intentional violation of truth. Fiction, or a false statement or representation, not intended to deceive, mislead or injure, as in fables, parables and the like, is not a lie.” Webster’s dictionary 1828
Agur did not want to be associated with uttering falsehood for the purpose of deception. He did not want his character or testimony corrupted by such activities.
Did you know, there will me no liars in heaven? Lying is an intrinsic to a sinful heart.
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Psalm 31:18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.
David gave us some wonderful words about speaking.
Psalm 35:28 And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.
What you say is a good indicator of your relationship with God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The choice is still yours,
