Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 30:7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
This dear request of God appeals to the heart as the believer places his complete trust in the Lord to meet all his needs.
We find a similar prayer by one called Jabez. 1Chronicles 4:10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
A person who truly trust in the Lord believes that God will meet his or her needs and is content with God’s provision.
The apostle Paul expressed his content in what God had done through the support of those prayed for and desired him to continue in the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians 4:10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Depending on the nature of each person there is a dread, a concern that poverty would cause one to curse God or that being rich would cause one to deny God believing he does no need God for he can provide for himself.
I know of a believer who is worth seven hundred million dollars, his concern was that he would not seek God because of his lack of need. He could provide for himself what ever he wanted or needed. But his greatest desire was to seek God. He helped and still helps missionaries who are in need.
The principle is laid out in our text. I would desire the same; Lord keep me from vanity and lies and keep me in such a state that I neither curse you no deny you because of temporary things in this life.
Never sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the temporary. Never sacrifice the things of God for temporary things.
The most valuable thing you can ever have is Jesus. As a believer, the most valuable one you can ever trust and serve is Jesus.
2Corinthians 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
The choice is till yours,
