Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 29:20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Proverbs 26:12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
In comparison we find the same man who is hasty in words is the same man who is wise in his own conceit is considered to be of little hope. Why?
I am reminded of King Saul who was hasty in his words when he spoke in 1 Samuel 14. Saul created great stress when he made a rash vow restricting food from his army, only to find that his own son Jonathan had broken the vow because he was not there when it was made.
1Samuel 14:24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
Saul’s hasty words nearly cost his son his life. (Read 1 Samuel 14.)
The thing about words is this: once spoken, words can never be taken back. Once words are released from your mouth their impact is unstoppable. Choose your words wisely.
Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Proverbs 12:18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
Proverbs 15:7 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.
Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Proverbs 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
If we take time to reflect we will find that Jesus never spoke words without value. Everything Jesus said was the word of God for He is the living word of God. Everything Jesus said was of great wisdom and eternal.
What you speak, how you speak and when you speak, reveal much about you, your character and your relationship with the Lord.

Proverbs 15:2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
James 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
Let the love of Christ be that which constrains you and your speech.
